The
goal as a undergraduate student is to attain a college
degree so that a career can begin. If the preparation
and resources are not utilized 100% before graduation,
there could be some tall mountains to climb in the future.
The best thing to do is to create a resume and practice
"Interview Techniques". There are so many different
ways to organize a resume. The main features of a resume
should include: contact information, an objective, work
experience, education and any skills, certificates or
licenses.
Once
a resume is complete, begin to practice on interview skills.
An interviewee should be prepared to answer questions
from the interviewer. The interviewee should also be prepared
to "Interview" the interviewer! This is your
chance to ask the prospective employer questions. There
are a number of ways to attain help in this area. A person
can have a friend ask them a series of questions, they
can practice in the mirror or they can look into the career
services department at their school. Once the confidence
of the resume and the interview questions grows stronger,
the "Road to Success" gets brighter!
Sooner
than later, the next thing to do as an undergraduate student
is to begin a co-operative education program (or internship)
in the chosen field of study. This is most definitely
a great way to gain that hands-on experience from the
working world. Another great benefit from a co-op program
is the building of a relationship with the employer and
the co-op student. Both parties will get to see each other's
work ethic. The co-op job may not open the opportunity
for full-time employment, but it is a great way to build
a professional network. "Never Burn Your Bridges"
because one will never know when they will have to cross
that bridge again!
